Upcoming Star of the Week:  Lilla

Math: This week we continued work in unit 6, which focuses on subtraction facts to 20.  The assessment on this unit will be on Monday, December 8th.  On Tuesday we will move to unit 7, Counting and Number Patterns to 120.  We will begin by making numbers 11 to 19, using numbers 11 to 19, counting by tens and using a hundreds chart.
Here are some good math games I have found for addition and subtraction:

Most of the math games and activities that I suggest come from National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  You can find tons of resources here:

Phonics:  We are wrapping up work in our sixth unit, which focuses on basewords and the suffix s ending as in shops.  We are focusing on pluralization as well as the second sound for s as in the word bugs.  Up next in unit seven will be eight new glued sounds.  (ang, ong, ung, ing, unk, onk, ink, ank)

Writing: Next week students will have a “Rate My Writing” lesson.  Students will work to score work samples on scale of one to four.  A one is a journal entry or story with one sentence and limited detail.  A four is an entry or story with four or more sentences and expanded detail.  Once students are comfortable and familiar with this scoring system, students will rate their own journaling and writing when they complete their work.  At this point in the year, students are expected to have four to five sentences as part of their journal entries, with appropriate use of capital letters and punctuation.

Religion: In religion we have been reading and discussing the Christmas story as well as reviewing Advent and the Christmas season.  If you have time, check out 1A’s written and illustrated version of the Christmas story outside the classroom.  It is very cute!

Enjoy your weekend.
