Math: We have been working through unit six, Subtraction Facts to 20.  Students are now familiar with all the doubles facts through 20 and are able to use these facts as well as near doubles to help them solve subtraction problems.  We will continue work in this unit after vacation, and have an assessment on this topic during our first week back.

Information about first grade math facts was sent home with your child on Thursday.  Our math facts program will begin the week return from school.  We will try to do math facts Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Nightly practice with math facts will support your child’s growth!

Phonics:  Today we had an assessment on unit six, which covered basewords and the suffix s ending.  Look for your child’s assessment early next week.  Up next in unit seven are the additional glued sounds ang, ing, ung, ong, ink, onk, unk, and ank.  Other topics covered in this unit are blending and segmenting the “ng” and “nk” sounds, narrative fiction vs. informational books, and reading with accuracy and prosody.

Science: We have been continuing our study of solids and liquids with exploration of solids over the past two weeks.  Students are working to sort solids by like attributes and compare and contrast objects using different terms; flexible, rigid, smooth, rough, color, surfaces and more.

Religion: In the coming weeks students will be hearing stories about what Jesus taught.  This study will take us up to the Lenten season.

Enjoy your weekend.
