Making Inferences with "No David" by David Shannon

An important part of reading in first grade is the study of different elements of literature.  We work a great deal with making predictions and inferences in our Guided Reading groups.  On Wednesday we completed a whole class lesson on inferences using the book No David by David Shannon.  This is the perfect book for teaching the term inference and about making inferences to first graders since the pages have limited text and there is lots of room for interpretation and inferences with each of David's naughty behaviors.

I read the book aloud first and created an anchor chart with each page of the book listed out on chart paper.  After I read the book we went page by page to make inferences for each scene.  What great ideas the kids had!  Students then chose their favorite scene to expand upon a bit more.  Students were asked to identify a scene, record their inference, and then share the clue that helped them make their inference.  Check out some of the great work below!
