First Grade Math Facts!
Dear Families,
The first grade students will begin practicing math
facts. We will begin with adding plus
ones. The students will be asked to
memorize their addition and subtraction facts to 12 by the end of the school
year. We will make the first set of flash
cards at school for plus ones. After
this, students should make their own flashcards at home to practice. Students will be given timed fact sheets and
we will call it a math game at school.
Once a student has completed the fact sheet in one minute or less with
no errors, they will move on to plus twos and so on. Each child will work at their own pace and
only the student and I will know what they are working on.
We will begin math facts during the first week of January and
students will work on them two to three times a week. While the fact sheets will not count as a
grade, it is important that students become fluent with facts to 12. It is important that students review their
facts at home to ensure success with this activity at school. I have attached a copy of a sample for you to
review at home. Please let me know if
you have any questions!
