Weekly Update February 6th

Our Valentine’s Day party will be next Friday, February 13th from 12:45-1:45.  Please remember that your child should have a valentine for each of their classmates.  We also ask that valentines do NOT contain nuts of any kind, as we are not able to distribute nut treats.  Feel free to celebrate with a pencil, stickers, eraser etc.

Important Dates/Events:
·         Friday, February 13th—Valentine’s Day Party 12:45-1:45
·         February Break—February 16th to the 20th
·         Thursday, March 5th—School Mass 10:15

Math: We completed work in our ninth unit, Comparing and Ordering Numbers to 100.  This unit focuses on 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less, and comparting and ordering numbers.  Students worked with the math symbols for greater than, less than, and equal to.  Our unit assessment will be next Monday.  Up next is Comparing and Ordering Numbers to 100.

Phonics: We are continuing work in our eighth unit which focuses on both blends and digraph blends.  Students will also explore r-controlled vowels for reading.  This unit will wrap up just before February break.

Writing: In phonics, students are working on sentence dictation with greater lengths than the first part of the year.  This sentence dictation requires that students apply what they have learned about spelling rules in phonics to written work.  A big piece of this is applying knowledge of trick words (high frequency/sight).  At home, review of these words for reading recognition and spelling is a good way to practice!

Contractions: Due to our snow days we had to postpone our work with contractions.  Next week, students will begin work with contractions.  Using the book I'm and Won't, They're and Don't: What's a Contraction?, students will explore the shortened way they can write words.  Look for more about this on our blog next week.

Religion:  We will begin discussion of Ash Wednesday and Lent as this will begin over our school break!

Enjoy your weekend!
