Moose Hill: We will be traveling to Moose Hill next Tuesday, October, 11th.  We will depart school by bus at 8:30 and will return by 12:15.  Students should bring a bag lunch, snack and water bottle for the trip.  This trip is weather dependent.  Students should wear their gym uniform and dress for fall weather in the woods.

Fundations Night: Next Thursday at 6:30, BSS will host a parent information night about our phonics program, Fundations.  This night may be helpful for you as parents to get a sense of the day to day instruction.  I have a previous commitment and will not be at school, however other members of the K-3 grade team will be presenting.

Upcoming Star of the Week:  Emersyn (October 17th)

Math: We just completed work in our second unit, Understanding Subtraction.  This week we worked with stories about missing parts, and subtraction problem solving through acting out problems.  We ended the week with our unit assessment.  Up next is our third unit, Five and Ten Relationships.  We will begin by representing numbers in a ten-frame, recognizing numbers in a ten-frame, and exploring parts that make up ten.

Phonics:  We wrapped up work in our second unit, which focused on three sound short vowel words, punctuation and proofreading procedures, and trick words.  An assessment on these skills was sent home earlier this week.  Our third unit will focus on digraphs, which is two letters working together to make one sound like in the word ship.

Religion: In Religion we discussed guardian angels both in class and during our school mass.  We are nearly done with our study of the Trinity.

Guided Reading:  We will begin Guided Reading next week.  The information that I gathered about student reading levels through the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment has helped me place students in small groups for direct reading instruction.  Mrs. Arbuckle and I will work with students several times during the week using books are at your child’s reading level.

Have a great long weekend!
