Constructing With Solids

To wrap up our exploration of solids, students were asked to collaborate with a partner for the construction of towers. Students acted as engineers to use what they learned about the properties of solids to construct towers.  We began by reviewing what a tower is and by brainstorming different objects that stand up on their own.  Students worked with straws, rubber bands, craft sticks, aluminum foil, cardboard squares, and paper cups.  We ended our science lesson with discussion of the different towers students created, with focus on which properties were useful for this project and which objects properties were not useful.  Check out the great work of our first grade engineers below!
