Today in phonics we had our first storytime.  Storytime is a whole class activity.  Students each have a copy of a decodable story and I have a chart paper copy on the board.  As a group we read each sentence word by word, then work to "scoop" the sentences into fluent phrases for oral reading.  Once we've completed the scooping we read the story as fluently as we can aloud.
The second piece of storytime is identifying the characters, setting and main events in the story. The purpose of this is to help students understand and retell a story. These are important skills for students to gain in the whole group, as students will be asked to identify these elements independently in Guided Reading groups. These stories are great to practice with at home since the are completely decodable and based on the work we have done in the classroom to date. Check out some hard working students below!
