Weekly Update January 16th



Important Dates/Events:

Family Shields: As part of our Catholic Schools Week celebration, each child is asked to make a family shield.  The shield template and directions went home with your child last Friday.

Reading: This week I began assessments using the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System.  To find out more about these assessments check out this page on my blog: http://mrsleary1a.blogspot.com/p/benchmark-reading-assessments.html.    If you would like to know more about your child’s independent reading level please let me know.

Math: This week, we began work in our eighth unit, Tens and Ones.  This unit has focused on counting with groups of ten and leftovers, numbers made with tens, tens and ones, expanded form, ways to make numbers, and making organized lists.  We will have an assessment on this unit next Wednesday.  Our ninth unit will be Comparing and Ordering Numbers to 100.  

Phonics:  We are entering the third week of our unit which will include a review and study of all new glued sounds before our end of unit assessment.  Other topics covered in this unit are blending and segmenting the “ng” and “nk” sounds, narrative fiction vs. informational books, and reading with accuracy and prosody.  We will have an assessment on this topic next Friday.  

Religion:  We have begun work in our eighth unit, which focuses on the followers of Jesus.  Students will explore how they can be followers of Jesus.
