Students in first grade are beginning to explore the idea of theme in literature. We are primarily doing this through read alouds and whole group discussion. Last week we read Mr. Peabody's Apples by Madonna to help us explore theme. I chose this book since the theme, or the author's message, is very clear for a first grader to discern. The overarching theme is forgiveness with a secondary theme being honesty. Since these are character traits that we work as first graders to embody, it is nice to see students identify these themes so readily!
