Weekly Update March 24th

Important Dates/Events:
·         Wednesday, March 30th—Math Night 6:30-7:30
·         Monday to Friday, April 18th-22nd —April Break

Upcoming Secret Reader: Mrs. Buyak

Math: We are nearing completion of our eleventh unit, Subtracting with Tens and Ones.  Much of our work with this and other units has involved the hundreds chart.  Next Wednesday night I will share some games and strategies related to this math tool.  Up next in our twelfth unit is Length.

As a reminder, please review math facts nightly with your children.  This will help ensure your child’s success in math this year!

Writing: Students have been working on their March portfolio writing piece, which is about their sugaring trip to Moose Hill.  Students are now working on editing and revising through conferencing with an adult.  Their final pieces are looking great!  At home, students should be regularly applying capital letters and periods in their writing.  Check out some photos from our trip below!

Phonics:  We are continuing work in our tenth unit next week, which will focus on segmenting and blending five sound words, adding the suffixes ed and ing, and the vowel teams oa, oe, ow, ou, oo, ue, ew, au, and aw.  This unit will span three weeks.  We also continue work on recognizing contractions for reading and writing.

Science:  Next week students will begin work in our next unit, Pebbles, Sand and Silt.  Students will sort and compare 20 different pebble samples both in and out of water.  After this, we will be screening river rocks using mesh screens.  Students will then organize the river rocks in to large pebbles, small pebbles, large gravel, small gravel, and sand.  It should be a fun lesson!
Happy Easter!
